Our uniforms help you to recognise the staff involved in your care.

But don't worry if you can't remember who's who - all staff members will introduce themselves to you and explain why they are there.

Nursing

Matron

Matron

Matrons work with senior nursing staff (sisters or senior charge nurses) to ensure the ward or outpatient department runs smoothly.

Matrons wear black tunics with white pinstripes and white piping with black trousers.

Advanced nurse practitioner

ANP

An advanced nurse practitioner can help form a diagnosis and manage your treatment at the hospital.

They have completed extra study to become experts in their chosen field – for example, respiratory disease, cancer or surgery. ANPs wear dark blue tunics with white piping and black trousers.

Senior sister or charge nurse

Senior sister or senior charge nurse

Senior ward staff are in charge of the department or ward. They ensure that the area runs efficiently and patients are getting the right care for their needs. They also perform line-management duties for ward and department staff.

They wear blue tunics with light blue stripes and white piping and black trousers.

Sister or charge nurse

Sister or charge nurse

Sisters and charge nurses assist the senior ward staff in the day-to-day running of the ward or department. They can administer medication, including treatments that may require cannulation.

They wear blue tunics with white piping and black trousers.

Staff nurse

Staff nurse

Staff nurses are registered nurses. They are in charge of individual patient care, administer medication and work with doctors and senior nurses (including ANPs) and HCAs to ensure patients’ needs are met.

They wear white tunics with blue stripes and piping with blue trousers.

Healthcare assistant (HCA)

HCA

Healthcare assistants are in charge of your personal care and some can also administer tests like SATs and blood pressure. Many HCAs have also undertaken dementia training and act as mentors to college students on placement during their health and social care courses.

HCAs wear white tunics with grey pinstripes and black trousers.

Senior ward staff are in charge of the department or ward. They ensure that the area runs efficiently and patients are getting the right care for their needs. They also perform line-management duties for ward and department staff.

Midwives will help you through your pregnancy. They run antenatal and early pregnancy clinics and manage your delivery.

Maternity care assistants are in charge of your personal care and some can also administer tests like SATs and blood pressure.

Therapies

Occupational therapist

Occupational therapist

OTs help patients of all ages who live with disablities. They look at everything from the layout of your home to teaching new ways of undertaking daily activities that a disability may have curtailed.

OTs wear white tunics with green piping and green trousers.

OT assistants help the OT in their duties. They can ensure you receive the correct equipment in working order.

They wear white tunics with green stripes and piping and green trousers.

Physiotherapist

Physiotherapist

Physiotherapist can assess, diagnose and treat patients with a variety of physical impairments/conditions through hands on treatment, exercise and advice.

They wear white tunics with blue piping or white polo shirts and blue trousers.

Physiotherapy assistant

A Physiotherapy assistant helps the physiotherapists with patient treatments by carrying out patients' individual treatment plans.

They wear light blue tunics with dark blue piping and dark blue trousers.

Imaging, diagnostic and screening

Radiographer

A Radiographer works in the imaging department. They undertake examinations using x-rays and ultrasound.

They wear red scrub tops with black trousers.

Imaging assistant

An imaging assistant works in the imaging department. They help other imaging staff during procedures and ultrasounds. They may help transfer you to and from your ward to the imaging department.

They wear light blue tunics with white piping and black trousers.

Audiologist

Audiologist

Audiologists are hearing specialists. They can test your hearing and fit hearing aids, as well as offer support and management for conditions such as tinnitus and hyperacusis.

They wear yellow tunics with blue piping and black trousers.

Phlebotomist

The phlebotomist takes blood to be processed by the pathology department. They regularly visit inpatient wards. There is also an outpatient phlebotomy service.

They wear green scrub tops and trousers.

Pathology porter

A pathology porter helps to keep the lab stocked with equipment. You may also see them collecting samples to be analysed by the pathology teams.

They wear green scrub tops and black trousers.

Administration and clerical

Ward clerks will be the first people you meet when you arrive at a ward. They undertake administrative duties like filing, answering phones and booking in patients.

Ward clerks wear lilac shirts with black trousers.

Receptionists will be the first people you meet when you arrive at hospital. They undertake administrative duties like filing, answering phones and booking in patients.

Receptionists wear blue shirts with black trousers.

Support services

Support teams

Support teams

The support team help transfer patients, collect oxygen and move heavy items.

Catering assistants serve food to inpatients and work in the hospital’s restaurant.

Domestic assistants make sure the hospital is clean and tidy. They are equipped to deal with everything from minor spillages to ward deep-cleans.

Supervisors are in charge of support, domestic or catering services. They regularly carry out inspections to ensure the hopsital environment is safe and clean.

You can identify these staff groups by their WeCare name badge, worn in addition to their security badge.
